Monachus monacus.,The Mediterranean monk seal, numbering fewer than 500 individuals in the world, is one of the world’s most endangered mammals. This species feeds on a variety of fish as well as octopus and squid. Mediterranean monk seals are diurnal and sensitive to disturbance. They have long been harvested for their skin and meat as well as being killed for competing with fishermen. Pollution, boat traffic, net entanglements and other human related problems have also lead to this seals decline. This specimen, originating from Northern Africa, was cast from a particularly large individual. .

Malayan Flying Lemur Skull Replica

Although this species is somewhat smaller than the Ganges dolphin and possesses several unique skull characteristics, it is considered by some taxonomist as simply a subspecies of the Ganges dolphin. Cystophora cristata., The hooded seal is named for the males inflatable nasal bladder used to attract mates. This species is solitary except during the breeding season. Hooded seals feed on various fish including cod and halibut as well as squid. Female hooded seals nurse their pups for only four days. During this time, the pups can double their birth weight from 25 lbs. to 50 lbs.

Solenodon paradoxus., The Haitian Solenodon is found exclusively on the island of Hispaniola. Although considerably larger, this species looks much like a shrew. Its head is large in proportion to its body and the rostrum is elongated. A defining characteristic of the solenodon is the os proboscis. This bone, located on the tip of the rostrum, supports its long cartilaginous snout. Haitian solenodons are insectivores, foraging for insects and other ground dwelling invertebrates.
